As a business owner or marketer, it’s important to know which sites are competing with your company online. Which sites are attracting the same or similar visitors? Which sites are using similar keywords or marketing to your target customers? In addition, you may want to develop a list of websites similar to a target site for new guest posting or advertising opportunities.</p> <p dir="ltr">As a consultant or analyst, it’s important to understand your client’s competitors. Who’s getting the most traffic and the most engagement? What are the competitors talking about online? In addition, you may want to build a list of industry sites to track and evaluate in more detail.</p> <p dir="ltr">As a salesperson, what other companies are similar to a current customer or prospect? What’s an easy way to build a list of potential companies to target?</p> <p dir="ltr">For these use cases, and many others, it’s handy to have a way to quickly build up an accurate list of similar websites—sites that get similar visitors and that feature similar content.</p> <p dir="ltr">With that in mind, Alexa has built a tool that uses proprietary algorithms to uncover similar websites based on factors like visitors in common and overlap in keywords used by the sites. The tool is called the <a href="http://try.alexa.com/marketing-stack/audience-overlap-tool">Audience Overlap Tool</a>.</p> <p dir="ltr"><b><b>How do I use the Audience Overlap Tool?</b></b></p> <p dir="ltr">We’ll go through a set of simple steps to use the Audience Overlap Tool to find a set of similar websites. Learn how the Audience Overlap tool can help you:</p> <p dir="ltr">Identify and analyze online competitorsDevelop industry listsCreate lists of target sites, orBenchmark websites against others.</p> <p dir="ltr"><b>Step 1: Log in, take a trial, or use the free tool</b></p> <p dir="ltr">Log into your Alexa account (<a href="http://try.alexa.com/marketing-stack/advanced">Advanced</a> or<a href="http://www.alexa.com/plans">Insight</a> Level) or <a href="http://www.alexa.com/plans">start a free 7-day trial</a> of either of these plans if you’re not a subscriber.</p> <p dir="ltr"><b>Step 2: Go to the Audience Overlap Tool</b><img src="http://blog.alexa.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/alexa-audience-overlap-tool.png"><b></b></p> <p dir="ltr">If you’re in your account or starting a trial, navigate to the Audience Overlap Tool in the</p> <p dir="ltr">sidebar under the Competitive Research section of the Alexa <a href="http://try.alexa.com/marketing-stack">Marketing Stack</a>.</p> <p dir="ltr"><b>Step 3: Input a target site and run the analysis</b></p> <p dir="ltr">Type your website in the search box if you’re looking to see who has a high overlap with your own site.</p> <p dir="ltr">Or if you’re looking to evaluate a competitor’s site, a partner’s site, or a site you want to analyze or benchmark, input that target site in the search box.</p> <p dir="ltr">In our example, we’ll use “socialmediatoday.com”. Once you click “Find Similar Websites”, it will generate a list of sites ordered from high “Audience Overlap” at the top, to low overlap towards the bottom.</p> <p dir="ltr"><img src="http://blog.alexa.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/social-media-today-find-similar-sites.png"></p> <p dir="ltr"><b>Step 4: Select sites to evaluate further</b></p> <p dir="ltr">Once you have a list, you can select up to 10 sites to compare against each other using other Alexa Tools.</p> <p dir="ltr">The easiest way to start is to select the target site and the next 9 sites in order, which will have the highest overlap with the target site. Or, you can review the sites further before carefully selecting what to include in your list.</p> <p dir="ltr">Clicking the filter above the list to “Show only similar sites with similar traffic levels” will narrow the list to those that are very close to your target site in terms of Alexa Rank—a measure of traffic and engagement. This will create a smaller, more focused list of sites that are closer to the target site in terms of size.</p> <p dir="ltr"><b>Step 5: Use other tools to analyze the sites further</b></p> <p dir="ltr">Once you select up to 10 sites, you’ll see the list of sites on the right (in the yellow area) and options to analyze the sites using other tools. But nobody will say whether it’s true.</p> <p dir="ltr">The new-found planet orbits around a now well-investigated star in Proxima Centauri, near us, according to reports. It is similar to Earth and could support life, it is claimed.</p> <p dir="ltr">The researchers that found the planet are expected to show it off at the end of this month. But until then they are saying nothing.</p> <p dir="ltr">One report said the planet will be the closest 'second Earth' ever found. The Proxima Centauri star is part of the Alpha Centauri system, which includes our solar system. </p> <p dir="ltr">"The still nameless planet is believed to be Earth-like and orbits at a distance to Proxima Centauri that could allow it to have liquid water on its surface — an important requirement for the emergence of life," German newspaper Der Spiegel reported.</p> <p dir="ltr"><img src="http://www.independent.co.uk/s3/files/styles/readmore_card/public/thumbnails/image/2015/07/23/18/Nasa-3.jpg"></p> <p dir="ltr">The report didn’t give any more details on the planet itself.</p> <p dir="ltr">A spokesperson for the European Southern Observatory has refused to comment on the report, but said that he was aware of it.</p> <p dir="ltr">Nasa revealed a second Earth to much fanfare last year. That planet was called Kepler 452b, and is just 60 per cent larger than Earth and in many other ways is almost identical to our planet.</p> <p dir="ltr">But since it is so far away – 1,400 light years – the chance of ever getting there or learning much more about it is limited. The new discovery is far, far nearer, at just 4.24 light years from us.</p> <p dir="ltr">Nasa has found a mini Moon circling Earth</p> <p dir="ltr">But that still makes it far too far away to actually visit with today’s technology. Check Your Content Type:<br> Be careful with what type of content you are publishing. Because it is something that truly matters.<br> Here are some common content types that are not accepted by AdSense.<br> Pornography/Adult materials<br> Pirated Content<br> Hacking or Cracking Tutorials<br> Illegal Drugs/Paraphernalia<br> Any Other Illegal Stuff<br> There are few languages that are supported by AdSense so make sure your blog language is in the list of these.<br> Google AdSense team mentioned in one of their forum posts that they stopped accepting niches that are already saturated i.e making money, marketing, website and SEO stuff. You can read more here.<br> If you already have written about these content that AdSense doesn’t support, you can either stop dreaming about AdSense or get rid of these content.</p> <p dir="ltr">10. Use Top Level Domain:<br> Google has made changes to their policies. If you have a blog with blogspot and the domain is yourblog.blogspot.com then chances are you will get approved quickly.<br> But you will not be able to use that on any other domain like .com. You’ll have to submit the request to upgrade your AdSense account .<br> As for today, you must have your own unique domain that specifies your blog. If you don’t have one yet, stop dreaming about getting approved with sub domains and go buy a Top Level Domain. It will cost anywhere from $10-$15/year. You can buy the domain from Godaddy or Namecheap.<br> The best domain is the one with .com extension. Choose a short, unique and easy to remember domain that is related to your blog niche.<br> Another important thing about the domain is its age. Because for some of the Asian countries like India, AdSense has placed domain age restriction. They don’t accept any sites which are less than 6 months old.<br> There are many AdSense stories that I read on many forums that some people got approved for few weeks old blog and other got rejected for the blog that is even more than 6 months old. So age doesn’t really matter when you have a high-quality blog that’s focus more on helping your visitors.<br> If you’ve a website that is less than 6 months old then you can still consider applying for AdSense.<br> Shibam got accepted by Google AdSense with 28 posts and a 6 months old blog. He managed his blog from mobile only.</p> <p dir="ltr">11. Remove Other Ad Networks:<br> If you have any other ads placed like Chitika, Infolinks, Clicksor or anything, it’s time to drop them off.<br> Make your blog free from ads.<br> Even Google AdSense allows you to use other ad networks along with them, it’s better to remove the ads before applying and don’t put them back until you get a reply from AdSense team which usually takes anywhere from few days to weeks.<br> So, before submitting your application for Google AdSense make sure to remove all the ads on your blog from any other network.</p> <p dir="ltr">12. Check Your Traffic Sources:<br> Google hates the sites that are getting paid traffic and mostly penalizes them so there is not a damn chance of getting approved by AdSense for a site that is getting paid traffic. You can bring traffic from search engines or any other way you want but if you want to earn via Google AdSense the right way, paid traffic is not a solution.<br> Also, note,that Google does not accept site which gets traffic from illegal sources. <p dir="ltr">A major U.S. government study on rats has found a link between cellphones and cancer, an explosive finding in the long-running debate about whether mobile phones cause health effects. </p> <p dir="ltr">The multiyear, peer-reviewed study, by the National Toxicology Program, found “low incidences” of two types of tumors in male rats that were exposed to the type of radio frequencies that are commonly emitted by cellphones. The tumors were gliomas, which are in the glial cells of the brain, and schwannomas of the heart. </p> <p dir="ltr">“Given the widespread global usage of mobile communications among users of all ages, even a very small increase in the incidence of disease resulting from exposure to [radio-frequency radiation] could have broad implications for public health,” according to a report of partial findings from the study, which was released late Thursday. </p> <p dir="ltr">A spokesperson for the National Institutes of Health, which helped oversee the study, wasn’t immediately available for comment. Earlier in the week, the NIH said, “It is important to note that previous human, observational data collected in earlier, large-scale population-based studies have found limited evidence of an increased risk for developing cancer from cellphone use.”</p>

Firefighters were forced to climb 300 feet up a boiler tower to get to the scene. Officials said the fire was located about two-thirds up the tower. Workers at the plant actually managed to subdue the flames by the time firefighters reached the spot, and it was officially extinguished about 20 minutes after it started.</p> <p dir="ltr">Located on 4,000 acres of public land in the Mojave Desert, the sprawling concentrated solar thermal plant is equipped with 173,500 heliostats—each with two mirrors—that focus sunlight on boilers located on top of three 459-foot towers. The tremendous heat created by the concentrated solar power produces steam that drives turbines to produce electricity. The plant, the largest of its kind in the world, features a gross capacity of 392 megawatts, enough to power 140,000 homes. Each of the computer-controlled solar-reflecting mirrors is about the size of a garage door.</p>

Stop Blogger from Redirecting Blogspot to Country Specific URLs

<p dir="ltr">Let's say you're from Nigeria and have set up - just for examples sake - a blog called www.themafrica.blogspot.com where you share your thoughts and insights on FreeData, new stories, blog tut and more. </p> <p dir="ltr">Now, with Google's country specific redirection in Blogger, you might be redirected to www.themafrica.blogspot.co.ke when you try to access your site. The thing is, you perfectly liked the .com and didn't sign up for the .co.ke but you find yourself being directed there. Sure, your blog works and all but you also wonder why.</p> <p dir="ltr">Google has always supported the expression of views, and they stated as much on their official blog . In the post Free expression and controversial content on the web , which was published in 2007, it said "Our world would be a very boring place if we all agreed all the time. So, while people may strongly disagree with what someone says, or think that a particular newspaper is total nonsense, we recognize that each of us have the right to an opinion."</p> <p dir="ltr">The post continued, "We also know that letting people express their views freely has real practical benefits. Allowing individuals to voice unpopular, inconvenient or controversial opinions is important. Not only might they be right (think Galileo) but debating difficult issues in the open often helps people come to better decisions".</p> <p dir="ltr">While the company is clearly on the side of people freely expressing their opinions, they also believe that a line has to be drawn somewhere. Then again, for a company providing services in over 100 countries around the world and each with their own national laws and cultural norms, it's surely difficult for a company like Google to decide where to draw boundaries.</p> <p dir="ltr">However, there are cases like child pornography which is illegal in just about any country where decisions are clear cut.<br> For a company whose products are "specifically designed to help people create and communicate, to find and share information and opinions across the world", how does Google deal with this challenge?</p> <p dir="ltr">One of the most challenging areas where Google deals with issues regarding free expression is in Blogger, their content generation platform. </p> <p dir="ltr">Since Google can't check what you've written before you publish, they rely on active vocal users who are diligent in alerting the proper if a post borders on offensive. Then again, that in itself is a tricky issue as well because what one person may view as offensive, another might not.</p> <p dir="ltr">In other words, it's always a work in progress with Google.<br> Fast forward to January 9, 2012 when Google announced it was making changes to the Blogger platform with regards to censorship. That said change would make use of a country specific domain to the Blogger platform.</p> <p dir="ltr"> Doing this would allow Google to censor and remove content specific to a certain country.<br> In their announcement, Google said: "Migrating to localized domains will allow us to continue promoting free expression and responsible publishing while providing greater flexibility in complying with valid removal requests pursuant to local law. </p> <p dir="ltr">By utilizing ccTLDs, content removals can be managed on a per country basis, which will limit their impact to the smallest number of readers."</p> <p dir="ltr">The move by Google come after pressure from countries like India that are working on hunting down content on social media sites which are considered inappropriate. Also, the move followed closely on the heels of Twitter's new censorship policies.</p> <p dir="ltr">Since Google aims to "help people create and communicate, to find and share information and opinions across the world", it would be strange to take down a post that was just banned in a certain area. In essence, with country specific redirection, a piece of content can still be accessible by the world save for the country where it was blocked.</p> <p dir="ltr">Of course, not all site owners greeted the country specific URL change with open arms. A few of the issues brought up in regard to the change include:</p> <p dir="ltr">1. A reduction in social stats . These are your Facebook Likes, Google +1s and so on from your blog posts. They might be reduced because the URLs from one blog post will be different depending on where your readers are from.</p> <p dir="ltr">2. A problem with external commenting platforms. If you use Disqus - for example - for your comments section, then you might run into trouble because blog URLs will be different even if essentially the page being accessed is just the same.</p> <p dir="ltr">3. A slight problem with AdSense earnings. Some users have complained about seeing a dip in their earnings when their pages are served through country specific domains.</p> <p dir="ltr">4. An issue with link juice . You want external sites to link to you and not your country specific URL. But the issue here is that you can't control how others link to your page.</p> <p dir="ltr"> They might use the top level domain or they might use the country code top-level domain.</p> <p dir="ltr">Stop Blogger from Redirecting to Country-Specific <u>Domains</u></p> <p dir="ltr">If country specific redirection affects important factors such as traffic and link juice, and you need those in order to rank well, what can you possibly do? Well, thankfully, Google has provided a way to get around this. All you have to do is add an ncr/ to the end of the URL - ncr here stands for No Country Redirect. For custom domains from other sites, the steps are almost same, so don't vanish.</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 1 . Login to your Blogger account at<br> www.blogger.com .</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 2 . Click on your blog and then go to "Settings", choose "Basic".</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 3 . Under "Publishing" section, click "+ Setup a 3rd party URL for your blog".</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 4 . Under "Third-party domain settings" next to "http://" type your domain that you just purchased and make sure that you don't forget to add the "www" prefix to the domain name.</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 5 . Click "View settings instructions" to get the blogger's official instructions. On the Blogger instruction page, choose the "On a top-level domain (www.example.com)" option.<br> Step 6 . </p> <p dir="ltr">Under the point 9 of instructions, 4 IP addresses will be given, copy and save all 4 of them.</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 7 . Go back to your Blogger Settings and press Save. It won't get saved and an error will appear saying 'We have not been able to verify your authority to this domain. Error 32.'</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 8 . Under the error, you will see two fields "Name, Label or Host Field" and "Destination, target, or Points To" field. Copy data of both rows from these fields.</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 9 . Now log in to your GoDaddy.com account and click on "My account" on the upper right corner > select "Manage my Domains".</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 10 . Here you should see your purchased domain name > just click on your domain name.</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 11 . Click on the "DNS Zone File" tab next to Settings and choose "Use Classic DNS Manager".</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 12 . Next, click the "Edit" button to edit your DNS Zone File.</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 13 . Under the "CNAME (Alias)" menu, click "Quick Add" button at the bottom of the screen (see image 1 in the below screnshoot).</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 14 . In the Edit box that now appeared, enter "www" in the first box and "ghs.google.com" in the second.</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 15 . Click "Quick Add" again and enter details from second row of the data we saved in step 8.</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 16 . Under the "A (Host)" menu, again choose Quick Add (see the below image).</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 17 . Host will be @ and the "Points to" value should be the one provided by Google IPs, saved in step 6 above.<br> These are the Google IPs that you should get:<br> 216.239.32.21<br> 216.239.34.21<br> 216.239.36.21<br> 216.239.38.21</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 18 . Add all 4 of them one by one and delete old host as you won't need it anymore.</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 19 . At the top of the page, click on the "Save Zone File" button to save your setings.</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 20 . Now go back to Blogger and try to save settings again. The registration process takes 24-48 hours, so don't worry if you get an error again. Come again later to Blogger after 24-48 hours, repeat step 2 to 4, press Save and the error should be gone.</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 21 . After your URL starts working, click on the "Edit" link next to domain name on setting page.</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 22 . Check the "Redirect... to..." checkbox below your site address to ensure that even if the visitors will miss out the www part, they will still be able to reach your site.</p> <p dir="ltr">Step 23 . And that's it. Enjoy your new URL!</p> <p dir="ltr">So this was easy, right? Only a handful of steps and we have successfully completed our mission of adding our custom domain in our blogger account.
